Long-Tail queries are terms which are longer than four or five words in length – each long-tail query may only drive one or two visits to your website, however when aggregated together, they can drive the majority share of organic traffic, and conversions, to a website.
Targeting the long-tail drives more sales through your website and the best way to target the long-tail of search is to create unique content themed around your main generic target terms (the terms that you conceivably don’t expect to rank for anytime soon), and try to account for the trends or patterns which emerge in your niche.
For example, if you find that a high number of people use the word “service” when searching for your service e.g. “web design service Manchester”, then integrate the term “service”, in a natural fashion, into your web copy.
While the term “web design Manchester” may not account for a great deal of search volume, the term “service” could be utilised in a large number of queries which make their way to your website e.g. “web design service quote Manchester”.
The same principle should also be applied to link building – you’re not aiming purely to rank for generic terms, but also the long-tail queries which fall underneath your main search terms, so make sure and account for these variations when building anchor text links back to your website.

1. Not just another pretty faceWhile it is true that photos or graphics on your pages will make your blog look better, that's only one reason why images are important; they also need to enhance or at least compliment the editorial content of your blog. When you're hunting the various public domain repositories for imagery you need to ask yourself two questions: Is it an appealing image? Does it speak to my subject?
If we only published images that people like seeing, every blog would feature a cat doing something funny. You might also consider developing a series of graphics that represent each topic you cover in your blog. If your have a logo or something else you use for branding, you could start with that and build images around it. As perhaps the most extreme example of this, think about all the ways Google adapts its logo to commemorate various events.

2. Get the big pictureNo, I'm not talking about cramming a huge image into your post. I want you to think about all the SEO elements on your page as you're planning your image placement. You have keywords you're working into your h1 headlines, meta title tags and descriptions, right? Those should all be working together with one another, and now that we're adding an image to the page, we need it to convey the same ideas, or keywords. If these elements are not aligned, then you're probably not ready to add an image. Focus on the content, then focus on the image.

3. Naming the Mona Lisa
William Shakespeare wrote, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." That may be true, but the bard wasn't worried about SEO. With search engine algorithms some image names will work a lot sweeter to enhance your search result placement than others. If you've done everything in step two correctly—your keywords are properly incorporated into your pages and posts—you're ready to give your image a good name.
Sometimes popping an image into a post is the last thing bloggers do and they're to in a rush to get the process completed. Take the time to give your image file a name that uses some of your keywords. If you're posting about the best Caribbean beaches, don't use "beach1.jpg" for a file name. Something like "caribbean-clothes-optional-beach.jpg" would be better, if that expresses the content of your blog and the keywords you're optimizing for.

4. Alt! What goes there?
You will have sight impaired visitors to your blog. You'll also have readers whose connections are giving them fits and won't entirely load web pages. Your alt text substitutes for the images in those situations. If you don't provide good, descriptive, and keyword-savvy alt text, you'll leave some of your visitors wondering what they missed out on. Of course, search engines are also going to digest your image alt text, so make sure they use some of your keywords.

5. Untitled. Not!
Modern artists may be able to get away with presenting gallery shows of their works, with each piece titled "Untitled," but just like Shakespeare, they aren't striving for great SEO. The title you give an image pops up when your readers hover their cursors over your image. It gives you an opportunity to deliver editorial content to your readers as well as a way to increase your keyword profile to search engines.

That intentionality needs to stretch all the way from selecting the images you plan to feature, to dealing with the image names and the various tags that go along with your images.

In the distant past of SEO, there was once an art called “internal linking” that was seen as one of the most important aspects of optimising a website for search engines. I am not, by any means, suggesting that internal linking is a one way ticket to the top of the rankings, nor is it anywhere near as important as certain other on-page factors; however, it certainly should not be ignored, and here’s why…

Importance of Internal Links

Internal links are used to tell the search engines, such as Google, which page you see as the most relevant for certain keywords. If you should have a page on your website that has the subject of DVDs, then you place internal links from other pages on your website to this one using the anchor text ‘DVDs’. Of course the page you are linking to must be properly optimised for this keyword and, in an ideal world, no other pages on the site should be.

Internal linking is also used to help the search engines distinguish between similar pages. In the example above, they may accidentally rank the ‘TV Show DVDs’ page for the term ‘DVDs’, or any one of the other categories. This can sometimes be offset by having internal links for the term ‘DVDs’ linking to the main page. Of course, sometimes search engines have a mind of their own and will rank a sub-page anyway, but internal linking is at least something you can do to give it a bit of a push in the right direction.

The user also benefits from internal linking; if they are reading a blog post or an information page, internal linking can be a great way for them to find other pages of interest.

Rules and Guidelines for Internal Links

It is, however, important that certain guidelines are followed when internal linking, as it could have a detrimental effect if it is not done correctly.

It must be consistent. You should only use a certain anchor text or set of keywords to link to a page on your website – if the same anchor text is used to link to multiple pages it can confuse the search engines and prevent the right page from being indexed.
It must not be excessive; one internal anchor text to each page should be in any one page of content (navigation menu links don’t count). Excessive internal linking can look like you are trying to manipulate the search engines, when all you are really trying to do is point them in the right direction

What does social search mean?

Anybody who has an interest in SEO can tell you that links are one of the most significant ranking factors.

The importance of links won’t change anytime soon – but the influence of social media on search results is already starting to show, and will just become more important as the use of new platforms like Google+ is taken up by more casual users.

It is often said in SEO that it is people who control links, not websites. It can be argued that links are one of the most basic forms of social media, in the sense that they are generally recommendations from one site owner to another.

The trouble with this is that links are generally controlled by gatekeepers, not everybody has a website platform from which their voice can be heard – until now with the proliferation of social networks.
